Poudre wrestlers punish Niwot, 54-18

By Coloradoan Staff

Domination may be the best word to describe Poudre's 54-18 dismantling of visiting Niwot Thursday night.

Nine different Impalas won via pin.

"The pins really help catapult the momentum," Poudre coach Barrett Golyer said. "We really had a lot of guys stepping up and going after those pins."

Bobby Baxter (160) recorded Poudre's fastest pin. He needed all of 35 seconds to pin Evin O'Cleary.

Sam Gorton (189) improved to 21-3 on the record after pinning Tony Cano in 3:39.

Aaron Nelson (112), Leighton Chapman (119), Kyle Hawkes (130), Zach Bekkedahl (140), Chris Worrell (145), Vic Graham (152) and Luke Bertels (171) were Poudre's other grapplers to win by pin.

Poudre improved its dual record to 9-4 with the win.

"We're improving and that's important," Golyer said. "The guys are really getting tougher and are wrestling more physical. They're figuring it out a little more."

The Impalas should continue to get better because 152-pounder Anthony Doyle should return to the lineup Saturday for the Drysdale Tournament at Poudre after a sprained ankle kept him out of Thursday's dual.

Golyer said he also expects Brennan Whitman (171), who is still recovering from a broken clavicle, will be back wrestling by regionals.
