Doyle wins title at Drysdale Invitational wrestling meet

An ankle injury caused Poudre High School wrestler Brandon Doyle to lose his No. 1 ranking at 152 pounds.

It did not, however, cause him to lose any of his competitive fire.

Wrestling for the first time in two weeks since suffering the injury, Doyle was up to his old dominant ways. He won all four of his matches - two via fall - to win the Drysdale Invitational's 152-pound weight class Saturday at Poudre.

"I got a new brace (Friday), so I was able to come out and not really even worry about my ankle," Doyle said. "I kept in pretty good shape while I was out. I did a lot of cardio, just not too much live wrestling."

Doyle, ranked No. 3 at 152 pounds by On the Mat, broke open a close match against Greeley Central's Esai Magdaleno in the championship bout.

Tied at 4, Doyle executed two takedowns and a near fall during the final two periods en route to an 11-4 victory. He improved his season record to 21-2.

Doyle's title was the only championship victory for Poudre or Fort Collins wrestlers, and it was the junior's first high school tournament championship of his career.

"It's kind of weird because (I was) ranked first in state, but I had never won a tournament," Doyle said while clutching a filled out poster board of the 152-pound bracket. "It feels great. It should help get me back to No. 1."

Poudre's Sam Gorton advanced to the final at 189 pounds but was pinned by Greeley West's Justin Waterman in 5 minutes, 15 seconds.

"I'm just looking at it as a wake-up call," Gorton said. "Maybe I'm not working hard enough in the (wrestling) room. There is a lot of room for improvement."

Anthony Doyle, older brother of Brandon Doyle, took third at 125 pounds by pinning ThunderRidge's Tyler Nelson in 3:32.

Poudre 103-pounder John Toplyn took fourth, while teammate Zach Strohm, wrestling for the Poudre B team, also took fourth at 160 pounds.

Poudre took fifth and Fort Collins finished 10th in the 14-team field.
