Poudre High School won more battles but Fort Collins High School won the war Thursday in the annual wrestling showdown between the city rivals.
Fort Collins, behind the strength of two pins and two technical falls, edged visiting Poudre 30-28. The Lambkins had to sweat until the final match before they could celebrate a narrow victory.
"This was a great match," Fort Collins coach Brad Shute said. "Every match that we won, we won in the third period. It was senior night for us, and everyone gave a great effort so that the seniors could get a win in their last home match."
The Lambkins got pins from Dan Tyer at 275 pounds and Mike Conklin at 145, and back-to-back technical falls from Lee Nadeau at 160 and Scott Evans at 171. Cam Williams (135) and Anthony Ruybal added major decisions for Collins.
Poudre won seven matches to six for Collins but didn't accumulate enough team points to get a win. Zack Bekkedahl (140) recorded Poudre's lone pin, while Sam Gorton (215) earned a technical fall. Kyle Hawkes (130) won a major decision, while John Toplyn (103), Aaron Nelson (112) and Anthony Doyle (125) earned decisions.
